Islamabad: Pakistan’s former Ambassador to United States Hussain Haqqani’s life is in danger in the country and that’s why he cannot attend the proceedings pertaining to the Memogate case.
This was informed by Asma Jahangir, the lawyer of the former ambassador, during the hearing of the case in the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Monday.
The apex court asked Attorney General of Pakistan, Irfan Qadir whether he could provide security to Haqqani but he said that it was the responsibility of the government and he would ask them to do so.
The apex court observed that Haqqani should have kept his promise as he wasn’t given the immunity to remain absent from the court. It also observed that it had directed the applicants in the case to file their objections within five days.
Earlier, Hussain Haqqani’s lawyer Asma Jahangir argued that the reasons of her client’s absence had been submitted to the court earlier. She also informed the court that a copy of Haqqani’s letter was shown to Barrister Zafarullah on which Justice Saqib Nisar said that it had no legal value.
