Islamabad: Intelligence apparatus has apprised the government that some forces were planning to kill the detained United States citizen Raymond Davis in jail exploiting the staff on security.
According to well-placed sources, an intelligence report that the government received the other day has warned that life of Raymond Davis, a self confessed killer of two Pakistanis and detained in Kot Lakhpat Jail was in danger.
According to the report, some unidentified forces were waiting for an opportunity to kill him exploiting the security staff as was the case when former governor Punjab Salman Taseer was killed by a policeman on duty as his personal guard.
The intelligence officials have alarmed in the said report that preempting such an untoward incident was essential as it would create further problems for Pakistan. Not only that Pakistan would invite further pressure from the US but also it would have negative implications for the local security, the report has underlined.
Thus the intelligence report has required the government to further beef up the security of the Davis who is reportedly an American CIA operative or contractor in Kot Lakhpat Jail to avoid any untoward incident. The report has also suggested thorough scrutiny of the personnel deployed on the security of both Davis and the Kot Luckpat Jail. It has advised the government to keep the entire staff especially the low ranking ones on duty in the jail under constant monitoring so that the forces could not buy any of them.
It is pertinent to mention here that US Davis gunned down two Pakistanis on January 27 proclaiming self defence. The local court had shifted him to Kot Lakhpat Jail after his conviction and the Obama Administration has been constant insisting upon diplomatic immunity of Davis and building pressure on Islamabad for immediate release. At the same time, the government of Pakistan remained on its firm stance that the court of law would decide whether or not Davis was entitled to the criminal immunity under the Vienna Convention as claimed by the US.
For taking this stance the government of Pakistan has to face the brunt of American annoyance resulting in terms of practically stalling the bilateral interactions. The Americans have made it clear to Pakistan in so many words that they would not talk about anything else until and unless Davis is released.
