Brussels: Nato Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen’ term has been for one year till the end of July 2014 after allies’ agreement on Wednesday.
He will keep in charge as Nato-led forces are set to withdraw Afghanistan next year.
“Following a process of consultations, allies approved today Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen’s fifth year in office,” a statement from NATO ambassadors said.
Before the decision, former Italian foreign minister Franco Frattini was the most possible candidate to take over the position from Rasmussen, a former Danish prime minister, who took the charge in 2009, Reuters reported.
Nato has decided to withdraw its forces from Afghanistan till the end of 2014 and is gradually handing over security responsibilities to local security forces.
The NATO mission has seen a surge in attacks on foreign troops this year by gunmen wearing Afghan police or army uniforms.
NATO chiefs are traditionally appointed for a four-year term with the possibility of extending by a year.
