Kansas: Everyone carries the ultimate solution of stress with him or her always, all one got to do it to twist the mouth a little and stress will be vanished in seconds.
Researchers at the University of Kansas conducted an experiment including a stressful task and found out that participants who smiled throughout the task were less stressed than the ones who did not smile.
The research will be published in the upcoming issue of Psychological Science and this research is done by psychologists Tara Kraft and Sarah Pressman.
According to Kraft, “Age-old adages, such as ‘grin and bear it,’ have suggested smiling to be not only an important nonverbal indicator of happiness but also wishfully promotes smiling as a panacea for life’s stressful events.”
Kraft also explains the reason of the research, “We wanted to examine whether these adages had scientific merit; whether smiling could have real health-relevant benefits.”
The study included 169 university students participating in various tasks like drawing a star with their non dominant hand, putting their hands in the ice cold water etc.
And they did these tasks under three conditions, without a smile, with a huge smile and with a chopstick in their mouth to force a smile.
Heart rates of the students were checked and also they gave their personal views about the stress they felt during various tasks.
The results showed that students who wore any kind of smile were less stressed than the ones with expressionless face.
And the authors concluded that a smile during an unpleasant task or experience can reduce the stress level even if that smile is forced.
