Islamabad: The federal government has announced two public holidays on the 9th and 10th of Muharram (16-17 July).
According to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division, the Prime Minister has declared public holidays on the 16th and 17th of July 2024 (Tuesday and Wednesday) on the occasion of Ashura (9th and 10th of Muharram 1446 Hijri).
Muslims around the world will observe this religious event with sorrow and mourning.
In this regard, the federal government has also approved the deployment of the Pakistan Army and civil armed forces across the country as a security measure during Muharram.
The Ministry of Interior’s notification stated that the details of the indefinite deployment of troops will be finalized in consultation with relevant authorities, including the governments of Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Islamabad.
Furthermore, the notification mentioned that the date for de-requisitioning the mentioned deployment will be decided through mutual consultation among all stakeholders.
It is noteworthy that provincial governments, including Punjab, have requested the federal government to suspend social media platforms for a week to prevent the spread of hateful content online.
However, the federal government has not yet decided to shut down internet services during Muharram, and any decision regarding this will be made in consultation with the provinces.
