Child Trafficking Case: Bail Request of Sarim Burney Rejected

Karachi: The Karachi City Court has dismissed the bail application of renowned activist Sarim Burney in a case involving allegations of child trafficking and illegal adoption. The decision was announced by the Judicial Magistrate East after hearing arguments from both the defence and prosecution sides.

According to details, a hearing was held in the City Court regarding Sarim Burney’s case of human trafficking, illegal adoption, and fraud.

The arguments of the accused’s lawyers and the evidence from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) were completed. The court reserved its decision on Sarim Burney’s bail application, which will be announced later.

The Federal Investigations Agency (FIA) prosecutor strongly opposed Burney’s bail, citing ongoing investigations and concerns over potential evidence tampering if he were released. The prosecutor accused Burney of continuous falsehoods during the investigation, pointing to new revelations uncovered.”The accused is continuously taking refuge in lies,” he said

The FIA prosecutor stated that Sarim is accused of smuggling more than 20 children. Burney allegedly smuggled a newborn girl named Haya to the US, according to the FIA. Officials stated that Burney purchased the baby from her parents for Rs1 million and arranged for her transportation to the US.

The FIA prosecutor stated that the accused claimed that the parents of the girl named Haya released her willingly. However, Haya’s mother stated that Sarim refused to hand over her daughter.

Later, the court reserved its decision on Sarim Burney’s bail application.

On June 5, Burney was arrested upon landing at Karachi Airport from the United States.
Upon his arrival in Pakistan, Burney was taken into custody by the Anti-Human Trafficking Police following a complaint from US authorities. Allegations suggest that Burney and his organization facilitated adoption of children in the US without meeting legal requirements, resulting in accusations of human trafficking.
