Narendra Modi to Take Oath as Prime Minister for the Third Time on June 8

New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to be sworn in for an unprecedented third term on June 8, following a narrow election victory that saw his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lose its majority in parliament for the first time in a decade. Despite this setback, Modi secured enough seats to form a government with the support of key regional allies.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Modi, won 293 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha, surpassing the 272 needed to form a government. However, the BJP alone secured 240 seats, a weakened position that shatters Modi’s claims and ambition for +400 seats.

The opposition alliance, India, led by Rahul Gandhi’s Congress party, performed better than expected, winning 230 seats. Congress alone increased its tally to 99 seats, nearly doubling its count from 2019. The opposition is also set to convene in New Delhi to discuss their future strategy.

On Wednesday, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) from Andhra Pradesh and Janata Dal (United) from Bihar reaffirmed their support for the NDA. TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu confirmed his attendance at the BJP-led alliance meeting in Delhi, bolstering Modi’s coalition.

Modi’s personal victory in Varanasi was notably less decisive than in 2019, with his winning margin dropping from nearly 500,000 votes to just over 150,000.

The federal cabinet has recommended the dissolution of the current parliament, a necessary step before the new government can be formed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi submitted his resignation along with the Council of Ministers to Indian President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday.

During a press conference, the Indian President accepted the resignation submitted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and requested him and the Council of Ministers to continue their duties until the new government is formed. Modi and his cabinet are scheduled to be sworn in on Saturday.
