Rawalpindi: Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, General Syed Asim Munir, met with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to discuss key regional issues, including peace, stability, and border security. COAS General Asim Munir emphasized the need to strengthen mutual coordination at the Pakistan-Iran border.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the meeting, which underscored the commitment of both nations towards enhanced bilateral cooperation, took place against the backdrop of both countries’ efforts to ensure regional stability and economic prosperity.
During the discussions, General Munir described the Pakistan-Iran border as a “border of peace and friendship” and highlighted the importance of robust coordination to prevent terrorist activities that could strain the relations between the two neighbors. The COAS emphasized the necessity of securing the border areas to foster a safe and stable environment conducive to mutual growth.
President Raisi stressed the importance of cooperation between the two armed forces, suggesting that joint efforts could lead to sustained peace and stability in the region. He affirmed Iran’s commitment to work closely with Pakistan to overcome challenges that hinder regional progress.
The meeting represents a positive step toward reinforcing the ties between Pakistan and Iran, especially after the relations between the two countries strained significantly on January 16 after Iran conducted strikes in western Pakistan. In response, Pakistan first recalled its ambassador to downgrade diplomatic relations, then retaliated with strikes against bases in southeastern Iran two days later. After several days of heightened tensions, both nations agreed to reinstate their ambassadors and diplomatic relations.
