Federal Government Announces Eid-ul-Fitr Holidays, Clarifies Dates

Islamabad: The federal government has officially declared the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays following weeks of anticipation and speculation, with a notification issued on Thursday to confirm the dates.

According to the notification released by the Cabinet Division, offices operating on a five-day workweek will observe three public holidays from April 10 to 12, while those operating on a six-day workweek will observe four public holidays from April 10 to 13.

The decision, approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, was announced through a notification signed by Muhammad Aqib Gulzar, the Principal Information Officer of the Press Information Department (PID).

The announcement comes after the Meteorological Department predicted that Eid-ul-Fitr would likely fall on April 10, with the Shawwal moon expected to be sighted on April 9. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) stated that the crescent would be born on April 8 at 11:21 PM, making it visible for over 50 minutes around sunset the next day.

While the sky is forecasted to be clear in most parts of the country on April 9, the PMD cautioned that northern areas might experience cloudy conditions.

The sighting of the crescent moon marks the end of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, during which Muslims observe fasting from dawn to sunset. Eid-ul-Fitr, celebrated immediately after Ramadan, is a festive occasion that signifies the end of fasting and is marked by prayers, feasting, and giving of gifts.

Ramadan’s duration varies each year due to the Islamic calendar’s lunar-based system, making Eid-ul-Fitr fall on different dates annually. This year, Eid-ul-Fitr is anticipated to begin on April 10, pending the sighting of the Shawwal moon.

The announcement of Eid-ul-Fitr holidays brings relief and clarity to citizens, allowing them to make necessary arrangements and preparations for the upcoming festivities.
