Afridi Urges PCB to Back Shaheen Afridi Amid Talks of T20 Captaincy Change

Lahore: Former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi has voiced his support for his son-in-law, Shaheen Shah Afridi, amid swirling speculation regarding the pace bowler’s potential removal as the national T20 captain.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Afridi expressed his belief in giving Shaheen adequate time to prove himself in the leadership role, stating, “If someone is appointed as captain and given the responsibility, then they should be given time.”

Afridi pointed out the issue of instability within Pakistan cricket whenever there is a change in leadership at the cricket board, advocating for consistency in decision-making.

Afridi, who was perceived as a driving force behind Shaheen’s appointment as the national T20 captain following last year’s ODI World Cup in India, underscored the importance of allowing the captain to grow into the role. He suggested that any decision to change the captaincy would reflect poorly on the initial decision-making process.

Afridi supported the idea of hiring a foreign coach for Pakistan but emphasized the importance of selecting a high-profile individual with a strong track record. He suggested that a foreign coach should work alongside Pakistani staff to promote local talent development.

Regarding the inclusion of Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir in the national training camp, Afridi cautiously welcomed the decision, suggesting that rigorous training at Kakul could benefit their performance.
