Pakistan: Price Hike in Food Items Before Ramadan

Karachi: A storm of inflation has hit before Ramadan, causing food prices to skyrocket. Due to the absence of checks and balances, traders have disregarded the government’s price list.

In various cities, including the federal capital Islamabad, the prices of fruits and vegetables have gone beyond the reach of the common people. In Islamabad’s Sunday market, onions are being sold at Rs. 330 per kilogram, potatoes at Rs. 74, tomatoes at Rs. 160, garlic at Rs. 540, ginger at Rs. 680, bitter gourd at Rs. 280, okra at Rs. 320, grapes at Rs. 420, apples at Rs. 340, pomegranates at Rs. 400, mangoes at Rs. 240, and dates at Rs. 600 per kilogram.

In Karachi markets, garlic is being sold at Rs. 1000, ginger at Rs. 600, green chilies at Rs. 500 per kilogram, and chicken meat at Rs. 700. Additionally, in Quetta, there has been a recorded increase of Rs. 20 per kilogram in the prices of potatoes and onions, with potatoes now at Rs. 70 per kilogram and onions at Rs. 240 per kilogram.
