Islamabad: The Pakistani government has imposed a ban on foreign visits funded by pharmaceutical companies for government doctors.
According to a circular issued by the Federal Ministry of Health, government doctors have been banned from going on foreign visits funded by pharmaceutical companies and donors. The directive comes from perceived ties between healthcare professionals and the pharmaceutical industry.
The ban extends to the funding of government doctors’ participation in conferences, programs, and seminars overseas, with authorities emphasizing the need to sever connections that could compromise medical ethics.
Officials have stated that the purpose of the decision to restrict doctors from traveling abroad is to eliminate the nexus between doctors and companies. Through stringent measures to address the influence of pharmaceutical companies on doctors and promote ethical conduct among healthcare practitioners, authorities aim to ensure transparency and integrity across the medical profession, and further effective measures will be taken by the Ministry of Health in this regard.
It has also been mentioned that the decision of the Federal Ministry of Health applies to doctors serving in federal hospitals nationwide, encompassing all levels of the healthcare system. In addition to curbing foreign trips funded by pharmaceutical entities, government doctors are now barred from prescribing vitamins, minerals, and food supplements, aligning with efforts to maintain medical standards and prevent undue influence in patient care.
