Punjab and Sindh Prepare to Elect Chief Ministers Today

Karachi: The election of chief ministers in Punjab and Sindh will take place today after the general elections. However, the PTI and JI have announced boycotts of the election, expressing discontent over what they perceive as a compromised electoral process.

In the election for Chief Minister of Punjab to be held today in the Punjab Assembly, the candidate of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Maryam Nawaz and Rana Aftab Ahmed of Sunni Ittehad Council will be contesting. Conversely, in Sindh, the competition will be between Pakistan Peoples Party’s candidate Murad Ali Shah and Ali Khurshidi of Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan. Ali Khurshidi has been elected as a member of the Sindh Assembly for the second time. He has also served as the parliamentary leader of MQM in the Sindh Assembly.

The members of the Punjab Assembly from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz submitted Maryam Nawaz’s nomination papers, and the Secretary of the Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Amir Habib received the papers. Yesterday, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan was elected as the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, and Malik Zahoor Ahmad Chan was elected as the Deputy Speaker with a heavy majority. Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan of PML-N secured 224 votes, while his opponent Malik Ahmad Khan Bichar of Sunni Ittehad Council received 96 votes.

Meanwhile, in Sindh, PPP’s Murad Ali Shah and MQM-P’s Ali Khurshidi vie for the chief ministerial post amid heightened political tensions and boycotts by opposition parties. The PTI and JI have announced their withdrawal from the election process, citing concerns over electoral integrity.

The swearing-in ceremony for the newly-elected Punjab chief minister is scheduled for 2 pm at the Governor’s House, with stringent instructions for MPs not to bring guests along. Similarly, the Sindh Assembly will convene at 2 pm for its chief minister election, with the PPP and MQM-P candidates in the fray amid political boycotts.
