Lahore: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s nominated candidate, Maryam Nawaz, has been elected as the Chief Minister of Punjab.
The session of the Punjab Assembly for the election of the Chief Minister of Punjab is being chaired today by the newly elected Speaker of the House, Malik Ahmad Khan.
Maryam Nawaz secured 220 votes, becoming the first-ever female Chief Minister elected in Pakistan’s history, while her opponent Rana Aftab received zero votes.
As the assembly session commenced, the speaker explained the voting procedure, but as soon as the speaker announced the process, members of the Sunni Ittehad Council started to disrupt the session. Despite the speaker’s advice to remain silent and assured them that everything would be according to the constitution, members of the Sunni Ittehad Council continued to disrupt the proceedings. Subsequently, they boycotted the assembly session and left the premises.
Later, Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan assigned the task of convincing the Sunni Ittehad Council members to return to the assembly, however, members of the Sunni Ittehad Council did not return to the assembly and maintained their boycott. Upon their absence, the speaker initiated the assembly proceedings in the absence of Sunni Ittehad Council members and then proceeded with the voting.
It is noteworthy that out of 327 members of the Punjab Assembly, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has the support of 224 members, whereas 186 votes are required to become the Chief Minister. On the other hand, the Sunni Ittehad Council has the support of 103 members.
