PSL Bans Banners in Support of Palestine

Lahore: On February 19, during the fourth match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) between Lahore Qalandars and Quetta Gladiators at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, security officials stopped Faryal, a spectator, from bringing in a banner with a slogan in favor of Palestine written on it.

Faryal recounted the incident, expressing her frustration on social media, stating that security personnel treated her as if she were carrying a weapon. Despite having no harmful intent, Faryal was informed that the banner, emblazoned with the slogan “Palestine Will Be Free,” violated the venue’s regulations against displaying political messages.

According to reports, security officials told Faryal, “Taking these banners inside is not allowed. This is a political and controversial message. Some people may find it offensive. If you want to go inside, you will have to leave this banner outside.”

Faryal revealed that the behavior of the security guards was not appropriate. “My younger siblings who were with me got scared because of their behavior, so I thought it was not appropriate to argue.”

Faryal mentioned that security guards did what they were told to do. It is their job. According to one of the terms written behind the PSL tickets, “Posters, banners, or placards, depicting religious, political, or racial discrimination in the form of text or pictures are strictly prohibited.”

However, Faryal’s message was in line with Pakistan’s stance on Palestine’s situation under Israeli occupation. Pakistan does not recognize the State of Israel

Despite Pakistan’s clear stance on the Palestine issue, and non-recognition of the State of Israel, the decision of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to prohibit banners in favor of Palestine during matches raises several questions.

It is worth noting that on Tuesday, the Gaza Health Ministry reported that the death toll in the Gaza Strip has climbed to 29,195, with 69,170 individuals wounded, amidst ongoing Israeli assaults. The ministry’s press statement revealed that within the last 24 hours alone, the Israeli military has claimed the lives of 103 Palestinians and injured 142 others in the region.
