Indian Police Seal Delhi to Stop Farmers’ Protest

New Delhi: Indian police have sealed off New Delhi to prevent farmers from across the country from heading towards the capital to protest.

According to international news agencies, thousands of farmers from several states, besides Punjab and Haryana, are reaching the capital to protest against controversial agricultural laws, in addition to unsuccessful economic policies of the Modi government and issues related to agricultural commodities prices.

In an attempt to stop the protest, for the second consecutive day, Indian law enforcement employed tear gas and water cannons to halt farmers’ attempts to march towards the capital, Delhi, demanding guaranteed minimum prices for their crops. Delhi is fortified with razor wire, cement barriers, and fencing on three sides to prevent their entry.

The Indian government, like in the past, has resorted to the use of force. In this regard, the police have sealed off New Delhi and deployed heavy security personnel to completely seal off the roads.

Due to strict restrictions and lockdowns, other individuals attempting to enter the capital are facing severe difficulties. Only after rigorous interrogation and questioning by the police, individuals are being allowed to proceed towards the capital, leading to long lines of vehicles in traffic.

It is noteworthy that Indian police used tear gas shelling and baton charges against farmers attempting to enter the capital via tractors. Farmers at the borders of Haryana and Punjab were also targeted with violence.
