Fazal-ur-Rehman: No-Confidence Motion Against Imran Khan Executed on Gen. Bajwa’s Directive

Lahore: Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman, the chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F), has said that the no-confidence motion leading to the ousting of former Prime Minister Imran Khan was executed under the directives of ex-army chief General (retired) Qamar Javed Bajwa.

Speaking in an interview on a private news channel, Fazal expressed his personal reservations about the move, indicating that he was initially against it. He stated that during the no-confidence motion, General (retired) Bajwa and Lieutenant General (retired) Faiz Hameed were in contact. Faiz Hameed advised him to operate within the system.

Upon the directives of General (retired) Bajwa and Faiz Hameed, the PML-N and PPP decided to participate, while I myself was not in favor of the no-confidence motion, he said.

Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman further mentioned, “If I had opposed the no-confidence motion, it would have been said that Fazal-ur-Rehman saved the founder of PTI.”

Fazal revealed that while the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was spearheading the no-confidence motion, retired Lt Gen Faiz Hameed advised him to operate within the system’s confines. Hameed emphasized that all actions should be conducted through parliamentary channels rather than resorting to street protests. However, Fazal admitted to disregarding this advice. He mentioned that despite his initial stance, the departure of parties like the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) from the PTI-led government forced him to align with the majority against the PTI. Fazal reasoned that failure to do so might have led to accusations of aiding Imran Khan’s preservation in power.

The head of JUI remarked that “Rigging took place in 2018, and it’s happening now too. Apparently, the benefit of rigging in the election went to the PML-N.” He mentioned that the rumor is that Nawaz Sharif was made to win the seat in Lahore.

It is worth noting that the PDM, under the leadership of Shehbaz Sharif, successfully ousted the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government in April 2022, leading to a transitional caretaker set-up. Initially, Khan attributed his removal to alleged interference by the United States, a claim refuted by the Biden administration. However, later, Khan shifted the blame to General Bajwa.
