Gallup Poll: 50% Americans Support Israel’s Military Action in Gaza

In a recent Gallup poll conducted from Nov. 1-21, Americans expressed divergent views on Israel’s military action in the Hamas-led Gaza Strip. The results shed light on varying perspectives across different demographics, highlighting the nuanced nature of public sentiment.

Key Findings:

Approval and Disapproval Trends: The survey, reflecting a closely contested public sentiment, indicated that 50% of Americans approved of Israel’s military intervention, while 45% expressed disapproval. This near-even split underscores the polarizing nature of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Partisan and Demographic Differences: Digging deeper into the data, partisan and demographic disparities became evident. Approval rates were notably higher among Republicans, with 71% expressing support for Israel’s actions. Men, older adults (55 and above), and White adults also leaned toward approval, with rates of 59%, 63%, and 61%, respectively. In contrast, Democrats (63%), individuals under the age of 35 (67%), people of color (64%), and women (52%) were more inclined toward disapproval.

Views on U.S. Aid: The survey delved into perceptions about U.S. aid to the region. Concerning military aid to Israel, 42% believed the current level was appropriate, 25% deemed it insufficient, and 31% considered it excessive. Turning to humanitarian aid for Palestinians, 34% found it adequate, 40% suggested more aid was needed, and 22% perceived it as insufficient. These responses underscore the complexity of Americans’ views on foreign assistance amid a longstanding and multifaceted conflict.

Biden’s Approval Rating: President Joe Biden’s approval rating for handling the Israel-Hamas situation was a noteworthy aspect of the poll. At 32%, it trailed behind his overall job approval rating of 37%. This discrepancy suggests that public opinion on Biden’s handling of international affairs may be more critical than his general job performance.

Interest in the Middle East Situation: Despite not reaching the historical peaks of public interest seen during major events such as 9/11 or the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Gallup poll revealed a substantial 72% of adults were closely following the recent developments in the Middle East involving Israel and the Palestinians. This signifies a noteworthy level of engagement among the American populace with international affairs.

Statistical Breakdown:

  • Approval of Israel’s Military Action: 50%
  • Disapproval of Israel’s Military Action: 45%
  • Approval of Biden’s Handling of the Middle East Situation: 32%
  • Interest in Middle East Situation: 72%
