Texas: Dr. Aafia’s lawyer Clive Stafford Smith met Dr. Aafia Siddiqui in an American jail. He found Dr. Aafia depressed during the meeting.
Clive Stafford Smith said I met with Dr. Aafia for three hours and expect another three hours meeting tomorrow. Clive Stafford Smith immediately informed the Aafia Movement Secretariat in Texas, USA in detail after meeting Dr. Aafia.
Dr. Aafia’s lawyer said the behavior of the FMC Carswell Jail staff was extraordinarily hostile today. The jail authorities had already rejected my request to allow Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui to meet with her sister, Dr Aafia for the second time in 20 years. They had also denied permission to Federal Minister Senator Talha Mahmood who was to come to America along with Dr. Fowzia to meet Dr. Aafia.
He said the jail authorities also rejected my request for two Muslim lady doctors to conduct a free medical examination of Aafia. This jail is totally unreasonable, it seems we will have to file a case against the jail authorities to get Aafia her rights. Although Aafia is not in jail but in hell, Aafia has maintained great courage and resilience.
Clive Stafford Smith said Aafia was wearing an orange Guantanamo-style jumpsuit and a white scarf on her head during the meeting. She is detained in the “Administrative Segregation Unit”, which in American women’s jails is meant for the “harshest treatment” of any prisoner with only 25 out of 10,250 female prisoners kept there (of which Aafia is one).
Despite this, my meeting with Aafia was extremely constructive and pleasant, we spent most of the time talking about the various sexual assaults and other abuses she has been subjected to over the past 15 years, Clive Stafford Smith said.
Although it was difficult for Aafia to talk about this subject, she understands the need to do so if we want to bring change, he said. Aafia shared that she has forgiven her abusers even though they never apologized.
