LHC Grants Bail to Co-Accused in Waziabad Attack on Imran Khan

Lahore: The Lahore High Court has granted bail to the accused involved in the attack on PTI Chairman, Imran Khan in Wazirabad.

According to a private TV channel’s report, a 2-member bench of the Lahore High Court conducted a hearing on the case related to the attack on Imran Khan in Wazirabad and approved bail for the co-accused, Tayyab Jahangir Butt.

During the hearing, Tayyab Jehangir Butt’s lawyer, Mian Dawood Advocate, presented evidence in court stating that the police had arrested the accused on November 4, 2021, whereas JIT (Joint Investigation Team) of PTI leadership had declared his arrest on January 10.

The lawyer told the court that the head of JIT, Ghulam Mahmood Dogar, used violence against Tayyab Butt at the behest of PTI’s leadership and forced the accused to give statements according to their wishes. The prosecution alleges that Tayyab Butt provided a pistol to the central accused, Naveed, for the attack on Imran Khan. However, during the 6-month investigation, no solid and concrete evidence could be gathered against the co-accused. The 5 JITS set up by the PTI government also failed to provide substantial evidence against the accused.

The lawyer further argued that despite 6 months of investigation, the prosecution was unsuccessful in completing the investigation and filing a final charge sheet. According to the law, no accused can be kept in detention for an indefinite period, regardless of the severity of the charges. Moreover, the Lawyer demanded the Lahore High Court to release the co-accused, Tayyab Jehangir Butt, on bail.

During the hearing, the prosecution submitted the case record to the court. The government lawyer informed the court that Tayyab Butt was nominated based on the statement of co-accused Waqas, but the accused’s lawyer responded that there was no direct testimony of involvement or conspiracy in the incident. After listening to the arguments, the court approved bail for the co-accused Tayyab Jehangir Butt against a surety bond of 500,000 rupees.
