Karachi: Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman, the leader of Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi, has stated that ‘Selected Mayor’ Murtaza Wahab should take immediate action regarding the cleaning of drains considering the upcoming monsoon season. He urged for the swift transfer of responsibilities and charges to the chairpersons of Jamaat-e-Islami and other town committees. During the previous rains, the overflowing drains caused severe hardships for citizens, resulting in the loss of precious human lives.
Under the supervision of Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman, a meeting of 9 elected town chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of Jamaat-e-Islami was held at the Idarah Noor-e-Haq office. The meeting discussed the current situation of cleaning and the drainage system in the city, particularly focusing on the cleaning of drains in consideration of the recent monsoon rains.
The town chairpersons revealed that over a month has passed, but they have not been given charge, nor have they been provided vehicles or resources. Government officials are engaging in corruption under the pretext of the transition period, which makes it challenging for us to carry out our work.
Addressing the meeting, Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman said that due to the overflowing of the Shadman drain, a family fell into the drain, and the bodies of innocent children could not be recovered for several days. According to news reports, a contract worth 800 million rupees has been allocated for the cleaning of major drains. However, most drains in the city are still filled with garbage, and no arrangements have been made for their cleaning.
He stated that the Pakistan Peoples Party should abandon its practice of capturing authority and resources in its hand and should immediately transfer charges to the town chairpersons. This step is necessary to effectively deal with the expected monsoon rains.
