Curbing electricity theft through digital technology: Pilot project launched

ISLAMABAD: A pilot project to curb power theft through digital technology was launched here.

The pilot project will be implemented on the electricity feeder of Karkhano area in Peshawar. The area has a power theft ratio of more than 54 per cent.

UK’s GSMA has funded the project through 200,000 pounds sterling. JAZZ will provide state-of-the-art digital solutions for the project.

The pilot project will be implemented by the Centre for Intelligence Systems & Network Research (CISNR) — a private firm working on automation and digital solutions in various sectors.

CISNR chief executive officer Dr Gul Muhammad said that the project was similar to the smart metering project being introduced by the government under foreign funding. He added that the cost of the project is far less than the cost of the smart metering project.

The new digital solution introduced by the CISNR works on the basis of the installation of ‘smart electronic’ devices at various stages of the electricity supply chain.  The monitoring offices will detect the amount of electricity consumption from meters and electricity supplied to that area.

If any discrepancy was detected in the supply and consumption the distribution company will narrow down it to apprehend the thieves.

Dr Gul said that after the success of this pilot project, his company would be striving to establish a consortium with JAZZ and other companies and participate in the bidding in the AMI programme.

JAZZ chief commercial officer Ali Naseer said that JAZZ will provide state-of-the-art digital devices for the project

He said that the company has developed an app where consumers can check their electricity consumption on mobile phones, but it will not be implemented in the pilot project.

He said the mobile-based solutions had already been implemented at several public sector departments.

Max Cuveller of GSMA, who had arrived from London to participate in the launch of the pilot project, said the company was involved in social projects in more than 50 countries worldwide.
