KOLKATA: Thanks to all-round performance from skipper Shahid Afridi, Pakistan beat Bangladesh by 55 runs to register their first victory in ICC WT20 2016 victory at Eden Garden, Kolkata.
Pakistan after winning the toss chose to bat first on a flat track, Pakistan top order bated really well and posted 201/5 in the first innings.
Pakistan were 26 for 1 when Hafeez joined Shehzad on the crease, the duo added 96-run partnership for the second wicket which is also a record partnership for Pakistan in T20s.
Ahmed Shehzad, while trying to clear the fence ended up in the hands of the field on mid wicket. He scored 52 off just 29 balls, leaving Pakistan 121/2.
Hafeez was next to complete his half-ton on 36 balls.
Afridi along with Hafeez (63), took the power-hitting to another level and before leaving the crease (on second last ball of the match), he had scored 49 runs just 19 balls.
Bangladesh took a shaky start as their opener Somya Sarkar went for duck, missing an in swing delivery from Mohammad Amir that crashed his middle and off stump. Bangladesh were 1-1 when in-form batsman Sabbir joined Tamim Iqbal on the crease, the duo put together a 43-run partnership before Afridi removed Sabbir (25) with a googly. Tamim Iqbal (24) who had score a hundred against Oman in WT20 qualifier, was third to depart, and Afridi’s second prey in the match.
Muhammadullah (4), Mushfiq (18) and Mithun (2) were next wicketes to fall, though Shakibn al Hasan (50*) fought brilliantly, but ut was too late for his team.
Bangladesh could manage 146 runs in 20 overs ofr 6 wickets and Pakistan won the game by 55 runs.
