A small distance from the capital, Islamabad is the ‘one time’ city, Taxila or Takshashila i.e the city of cut stone, which is the residue of our ancestors who were there a millennium ago. This enthralling part of our history is recognized so by the Global Heritage Fund who has termed it an endangered site for it being near to extinction due to lack of funding, development, and conflict.
This great city was situated at the junction of the three great trade routes connected, one from eastern India, the second from western Asia and the third from Central Asia/Kashmir. They prospered until the trading routes flourished but around the 5th century those routes lost their importance, and the city was eventually demolished by the Huns.
It was in 1980 that UNESCO designated Taxila and the area’s adjoining it as a World Heritage Site.
