MQM to challenge LHC verdict against Altaf

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Barrister Farogh Naseem Monday announced that the party is going to challenge the Lahore High Court order banning broadcast of images and speeches of Altaf Hussain on print and electronic media.

Speaking to a press conference in Karachi, Barrister Farogh said that any arbitrary order by the court can be challenged in the apex court.

He said that three petitions, seeking ban on MQM and broadcast of Altaf Hussain’s speeches, were filed by the lawyers in the LHC, however, the party received no notice from the court.

The MQM leader said that Altaf Hussain and all the party leaders respect the LHC.

Earlier, the Lahore High Court directed authorities to prevent publication/broadcast of Altaf Hussain’s photos and statements in print and electronic media.

During the course of hearing by LHC full bench, counsel of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) told the court that all television channels, through a letter on May 1, have already been directed to ban broadcast of Hussain’s speeches.

At which the court expressed its displeasure, observing that the PEMRA directive was not specific in nature. Justice Mazahir Ali Naqvi ordered PEMRA representative to issue a fresh letter to all channels and newspapers today for immediate ban on Altaf Hussain’s photos and statements.

Additional Attorney General of Pakistan also appeared in the court which inquired about dual nationality of Altaf Hussain.
