ATC declares Altaf Hussain absconder in Rangers threatening case

KARACHI: An anti-terrorism court of Karachi on Saturday declared Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain an absconder in a case pertaining to use of threatening language against officials of Sindh Rangers.

During the case hearing, investigation officers from Civil Lines Police Station submitted a report containing statements of two witnesses from Azizabad area.

The witnesses including Sub-Inspector Din Muhammad and Muhammad Zahid testified that Altaf Hussain went to London in 1992 and still resides there.

Meanwhile, the court directed the authorities to arrest Altaf Hussain and present him on September 20.

In July this year, several cases were registered in different parts of the country against Altaf Hussain for using threatening language against the chief of Sindh Rangers and the paramilitary force during his telephonic speeches.

The paramilitary Rangers have been carrying out an operation aimed at stopping the wave of political, religious, ethnic and criminal violence that has swamped the city in recent years.

Hussain controls the party from London, where he has lived in self-imposed exile since leaving Pakistan in the early 1990s, and now has British citizenship.
