SCOUT denies Google appeal on Billion Dollar Oracle lawsuit

WASHINGTON: Supreme Court of the United States (SCOUT) rejected Google’s appeal against a lower court decision favoring Oracle in a Billion Dollar lawsuit. A 2010 decision was overturned into Oracle’s favor in 2012 when a jury decided that Google did infringe on copyrights.

Oracle corp sought more than $1 billion in damages with a claim on 37 Java application programming interfaces (APIs) when it was building Android. Oracle believed that Google infringed the structure, sequence and organization of their APIs.

General Counsel, Oracle Dorian Daley speaking on the decision stated that, “Today’s Supreme Court decision is a win for innovation and for the technology industry that relies on copyright protection to fuel innovation,”. Oracle argues that “Google was free to write its own code to perform the same functions as Oracle’s, instead, it plagiarized.”

“We will continue to defend the interoperability that has fostered innovation and competition in the software industry,” Aaron Stein, a Google spokesman replied on the matter said. Google is of the stance that ““If the Federal Circuit’s holding had been the law at the inception of the Internet age, early computer companies could have blocked vast amounts of technological development by claiming 95-year copyright monopolies over the basic building blocks of computer design and programming,”

Google vs Oracle case has divided the Silicon Valley into two where Yahoo Inc, Red Hat Inc and Hewleet-Packard Inc are backing Google on the other hand Microsoft Corp., NetApp Inc and EMC Corp are supporting Oracle at the appeals court level.
