President Stresses NEPRA To Improve Infrastructure

ISLAMABAD – President Mamnoon Hussain urged the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to improve the transmission line and electric infrastructure with the help of private sector.

The president was talking to a NEPRA delegation headed by its Chairman Tariq Saddozai who informed him about authority’s performance and future plans.

But, the president’s directive surprised a power ministry official who was reported as saying that there was perhaps a misunderstanding about the role and responsibility of NEPRA.

The official who did not identify himself said that the work which the President was expecting was beyond the responsibilities of NEPRA.

NEPRA is a quasi-regulatory body established under an act of parliament to work as an independent authority. Its job is to balance the interests of various stakeholders, including the government, the private sector and the consumer.

According to a spokesperson for the Presidency, Mr. Hussain discussed matters relating to the performance of NEPRA and asked the delegation to break the networks of corrupt elements in electricity generation and distribution sectors.
