RIYADH — Saudi Arabia on Wednesday recalled its ambassador to Sweden , a Foreign Ministry source said, Saudi Gazette reported.
The source said the move comes as a result of the statements issued by Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom, which are a blatant interference in the Kingdom’s internal affairs.
Such statements, which have harmed the Kingdom, are not permitted by international charters or diplomatic norms and are not in harmony with the cordial relations between countries, said the source.
It is pertinent to mention here that, Sweden had announced Tuesday it will not renew a military cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia, effectively ending defense ties due to mounting concerns over rights issues.
“We have received information that Saudi Arabia has called its ambassador home,” Erik Boman, spokesman for Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom, said on Wednesday, Al-Jazeera English reported.
He said the reason given for the action was Sweden’s criticism of Saudi Arabia’s record on human rights and democracy.
Earlier this week Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom said she was barred from giving a speech to the Arab League in Cairo after protests from Saudi delegates.
