ISLAMABAD: Polling for Senate election on Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) was suspended by Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) over ambiguities created due to late night promulgation of Presidential Ordinance regarding Senate election procedure on FATA seats.
The late night Ordinance withdrew the 2002 Presidential Order, which had given each MNA from FATA to cast four votes for electing Senate member from the tribal areas. Now, each FATA MNA has one vote to cast for electing member of Upper House from the tribal areas.
When on Thursday morning, the polling process was to begin, different quarters raised objection over the late night Ordinance, saying that it was a bid to rig the election.
The presiding officer suspended the polling and has recommended to the Election Commission of Pakistan to postpone the polls on FATA seat, as there are ambiguities over the procedures.
The EC has consulted the Law Ministry with regards to the overnight presidential decree.
