President accepts resignation of Governor Punjab

LAHORE: President Syed Mamnoon Hussain has accepted the resignation of Governor Punjab Chaudhry Sarwar who resigned from his post on Thursday (today).

Governor Punjab has sent his resignation to president last night. According to sources governor Punjab decided to quit the post after consultation with his friends including Lord Nazir Ahmed.

Chaudhry Sarwar had taken charge of the post on 2nd August 2013.  Meanwhile Governor Punjab also met with staff of the governor house and also held farewell meeting with Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif.

Meanwhile Speaker Punjab Assembly Rana Muhammad Iqbal Khan has resumed duties as acting governor Punjab.

Meanwhile, addressing a news conference in Lahore, Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar thanked Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif for showing confidence over him for the post of Governorship.

Sarwar said that he had decided to resign from post a long time ago as a Punjab Governor; he could not solve people’s issue especially of overseas Pakistanis.

Chaudhry Sarwar clarified that he tendered resignation out of will and neither the presidency nor Prime Minister House demanded the resignation or any explanation whatsoever.

He said that resignation was a conscientious act. “I want to witness a democracy where a common man’s son can get the same opportunities and rights as the elite in this country,” Sarwar said, adding that he has resigned of his own volition and not under pressure.

Chaudhry Sarwar pointed out that it is Pakistan’s bad luck that honesty is scarce in the country.

Sarwar said, the decision to resign was his own and he had no contact with the President House nor the Prime Minister House in his regard, adding that if he a proven wrong he is ready to face any punishment.

Sarwar further added that he came to Pakistan to serve the people and the country. Unfortunately he was unable to execute the plans he had to serve the people as a Governor and had therefore decided a few months ago that he would step down.

Sarwar also apologised to the Overseas-Pakistanis in his press conference.

The moves comes days after he called out the federal government for failing to enter partnership with the United States government as he said India had done. At the press conference Sarwar said, “We have no objection to Obama’s India visit, says Sarwar, but Obama should have treated Pakistan equally and visited to express solidarity.”

The government accepted his resignation, with Punjab Assembly Speaker Rana Iqbal having taken over as acting governor Punjab.

Meanwhile former president Asif Ali Zardari telephoned Governor Punjab Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar and asked about the reasons behind his resignation.

As per sources, Asif Ali Zardari called Chaudhry Sarwar via telephone to find out the reality behind his resignation. Moreover, sources reported that a meeting has also been expected between both leaders.

Chaudhry Sarwar, a former British MP, gave up his British nationality in August 2013 to serve as Governor of Punjab on the invitation of Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) leadership.

Having served as Labour Party Member of Parliament in Glasgow for 13 years (from 1997 till 2010), Chaudhry Sarwar comes with the experience of legislation besides having been a successful businessman. He was also the first Muslim to sit in the British parliament.
