Editor arrested over reprinting Charlie Hebdo cartoon in India

MUMBAI: Indian police have arrested and bailed the editor of an Urdu-language newspaper, Avadhnama, for reprinting satirical cartoons of French magazine Charlie Hebdo, foreign news agency reported on Thursday.

Editor of ‘Avadhnama’ newspaper in India, reportedly named as Shirin Dalvi, has been arrested by police in Mumbai over republication of satirical cartoons of Charlie Hebdo.

Dalvi was arreseted under section 295A of the Indian Penal code, which bans malicious and deliberate acts intended to profane religious feelings in the country.

A senior police official in Mumbra told AFP that she was arrested by the law enforcers while she was granted bail from the court but investigations were still underway.

However, the police official has not confirmed the details of the Charlie Hebdo caricatures in questions which was reprinted in Avadhnama newspaper which has several editions across India.
