Calpol, the medicine widely used in most homes for comforting childhood aches, declared dangerous by health professionals due to its main ingredient – a pain-killing medicine paracetamol which causes liver damage and even death after an overdose.
Calpol is used to treat common childhood conditions including fever, earache and teething trouble.
Largely selling brand primarily for childhood pains, Calpol, has declared dangerous for health by the doctors which urged the company to make the medicine less appealing to the children as an accidental overdose of paracetamol can cause liver damage and, in rare cases, prove fatal.
Calpol is now available in strawberry taste and pink colouring which makes it more appealable for children. Doctors now urged Calpol to make change taste and appearance of the medicine.
At least 1,691 children aged one to four were admitted to hospital in 2012-13 due to ‘accidental poisoning’ by medicines including non-prescription painkillers ibuprofen, paracetamol and aspirin. Moreover, nearly five children were admitted to hospitals daily because of accidental ovedoses of painkillers, Daily Mail revealed statistics of The Health and Social Care Information Centre – UK.
A 2007 study found that 84 per cent of babies are given Calpol in their first six months since birth. Moreover, The brand’s Infant Suspension Formula, suitable for babies aged two months and over, is pink and strawberry-flavoured, while the Six Plus formula is orange-flavoured and coloured.
Doctor and author Dr Max Pemberton realised during the study that Calpol’s bright packaging and appealing taste turned attractable for a child who has eager to eat sweets. While, purple packaging for the Infant Suspension reminds you of Cadbury’s chocolate while the medicine itself looks more like milkshake.
