PARIS: A French ‘Le Monde’ newspaper’s Twitter account has been hacked by a group of pro-Syrian regime reportedly named as Syrian Electronic Army (SEA) apparently to protests against controversial cartoons published in Paris magazine Charlie Hebdo this month.
The hackers tweeted message early Wednesday including one readable ‘Je ne suis pas Charlie’ opposing the hashtag ‘Je Suis Charlie (I am Charlie)’ which became popular to show solidarity with the 12 deceased staff members of attacked Charlie Hebdo magazine.
The Twitter account has prominent followership up to 3.14 million users linked with official website (lemonde.fr).
Supportive tweets for Palestine and against the bombing of Syria also posted on the hacked account till it got suspended by the Twitter administration, AFP reported.
However, the account was restored on Wednesday morning with first official tweet that said “Our account was hacked, but we have it back under control. We apologise for the fake messages posted in our name.”
The hackers also made ‘unsuccessful’ attempts to hack the newspaper’s website on Sunday and Monday, while the group attempted to get into its Twitter account by sending false emails to its editors. Le Monde said.
According to report, SEA aims to spread counter-revolutionary propaganda and hit back at news outlets it says slant their reporting of the Syria conflict.
