Schools, colleges reopen across Pakistan after extended winter vacations

ISLAMABAD: After the gory attack on Army Public School Peshawar on December 16 that killed 134 students among a total of 150 people, schools, colleges, universities and other educational institutions opened across the country on Monday, resuming normal academic activities.

After the Peshawar attack, winter vacations were announced in schools and educational institutions. However, when the vacations ended on December 31, these were extended till January 12 on security grounds.

On Monday, almost all public and private schools and colleges reopened across the country following the extended winter vacations amid tight security arrangements. However, some schools and educational institutions could not be reopened as adequate security were not taken.

In Karachi, majority of the government and private schools and colleges were reopened except few private schools and colleges which will open on January 15 following security measures.

In Karachi, the security arrangements in most of the schools and colleges turned out to be mere eye wash.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Bacha Khan University Charsada and Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute Awabi could not be reopened and were closed for indefinite period due to lack of security. These will be reopened only after adequate security measures were taken by the concerned authorities.

In Punjab, all private and public school and colleges resumed academic activities after reopening on Monday. However, missionary schools in the province will remain closed till January 18 and will reopen on Jan 19.

In Balochistan, all private and public schools and colleges were reopened and academics activities resumed there.

From across the country, no report of attack or untoward incidents regarding schools reopening was received and academic activities were resumed smoothly and in a peaceful atmosphere.
