Major electricity breakdown takes place in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Electricity supply system confounded following a worst technical fault suffered by central powerhouses including Tarbela and Ghazi Barotha on Friday (today) which affected a large part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab provinces.

Technical experts of the National Power Control Center found no solutions as far to counter the major fault which led a large-scale power breakdown for almost five hours.

Various districts of KP province that forced into darkness while some among them include Peshawar, Charsadda, Mardan, Swabi and Nowshera.

Multan, Faisalabad, Gujrat, Narwal, Dera Ismail Khan, Mandi Bahauddin and several other cities of Punjab province are suffering major power breakdown.

Ministry of Water and Power spokesperson said that the major fault occurred due to a temporary fixture of the transmission line which was done by NTDC engineers some days ago. He added that the technical experts were consistently making efforts to synchronise the power frequencies to restore electricity supply.

Foreign and domestic flights were delayed at Allama Iqbal International Airport, Lahore followed by the hours long power breakdown. Several hospitals went on private power management in the provincial capital of Punjab to continue facilitating the patients in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and operation theaters.

It is noteworthy to mention here that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday had announced reduction in electricity tariff up to Rs 2.32 per unit and second reduction in petroleum a further reduction in petroleum products prices which was likely to be applicable from the beginning of next month.
