IDPs, police clash leaves two dead in Bannu

BANNU: At least two Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from North Waziristan were killed in clashes with police during a food distribution drive on Thursday.

A stampeded broke out during the food distribution drive at the Bannu Sports Complex. Police opened aerial firing to disperse the crowd.

The IDPs threw stones at the police and started looting the ration centre. Police baton charged and used tear gas against the IDPs in an effort to bring the situation under control.

Two IDPs lost their lives while 11 others were injured. The clashes also left 17 policemen injured. Over 150 IDPs were arrested following the incident.

According to a private TV channel hundreds of people blocked main Bannu-Peshawar road and pelted police with stones in protest, prompting the law-enforcers to fire warning shots in the air to disperse them.

The infuriated mob torched many of the camps and clashed with police, tuning the area into battlefield for several hours.
