WASHINGTON: US soldier, who spent five years in Taliban possession, has been released by Taliban in exchange of freedom of five Taliban prisoners from Guantanamo Bay on Saturday.
28 -year-old US Sergeant Bowe Bergdehl was handed over to US authorities in good health.
US President Barack Obama shared his happiness, “Today the American people are pleased that we will be able to welcome home Sergeant Bowe Bergdehl, held captive for nearly five years.”
US released five Taliban prisoners from Guantanamo Bay for its one soldier.
Five Afghan prisoners were handed over to Qatar, which played a significant role in the exchange process.
Bergdehl is the only U.S. soldier held by the Taliban. According to the Pentagon, he went missing after five months of his posting in Afghanistan.
