NEW YORK: A massive explosion Wednesday injured at least 11 people and resulted in a building collapse and raging fire in Manhattan’s East Harlem, authorities said.
The building has collapsed in Manhattan after a report of an explosion that rattled nearby buildings and shattered windows in the area.
FDNY said it was responding to 116th Street and Park Avenue. Smoke could be seen from midtown, a few miles away.
The New York City Office of Emergency Management said four people are injured after the building collapse, which was near Metro-North train tracks.
“I thought a train had exploded,” said Marisa Aquino, who was at her apartment on 115th Street between Park and Lexington. “There are a ton of firefighters and a lot of smoke. Cops and first responders are everywhere.”
Metro-North service has been suspended out of Grand Central because of debris on tracks.
New York City firefighters were investigating the building collapse in upper Manhattan today, according to a spokesman for the fire department.
The spokesman said the department was responding at a building at East 114th Street and Park Avenue in East Harlem after reports of a collapse at about 9 a.m. The fire department said they had no information on casualties or whether anyone was inside.
Smoke and dust was rising from the debris and fire engines spraying water into the rubble.
