Sony Corporation said on Tuesday that it has sold 6 million PlayStation 4 game consoles worldwide as of March 2, well ahead of its target for the fiscal year to the end of this month.
Sony has said it hoped to sell 5 million units by the end of March after releasing the PlayStation 4 on November 29 in the United States, Western Europe and Latin America and rolling it out across other Asian countries since then.
It went on sale in Japan on February 22.
The PlayStation 4 (officially abbreviated as PS4) is a video game console from Sony Computer Entertainment.
Announced as the successor to the PlayStation 3 during a press conference on February 20, 2013, it was launched on 15 November 2013, in North America, and 29 November 2013, in Europe and Australia.
It competes with Nintendo’s Wii U and Microsoft’s Xbox One, as one of the eighth generation of video game consoles.
