Dhaka: The President of Bangladesh, Abdul Hamid on Thursday has invited Sheikh Hasina to form government after party got majority in the country’s most controversial election held on January 5.
According to reports, the President invited Sheikh Hasina to form the government as leader of the house when she called on him at the presidential palace,” spokesman Ihsanul Karim told reporters.
Bangladesh’s newly elected lawmakers were sworn-in Thursday, four days after Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League bagged a three-fourth majority in the contentious polls, marred by violence and opposition boycott.
The Awami League clinched a landslide victory in the parliamentary election on January 5 by bagging 231 seats in the face of a boycott of the polls by the BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance.
All major opposition parties had boycotted this recent ballot exercise, dubbing it a farce. In the words of the New York Times: “Months of violent protests in Bangladesh have taken a toll on the economy and have injected fear into daily life.”
