Nelson Mandela’s ex wife has recently revealed that he is struggling in speaking with people. He is very ill and utilizing facial expressions to communicate his needs. Mandela has been receiving intensive care for quite a while.
Winnie Madikizela Mandela Speaks
Winnie Madikizela Mandela explained that Mandela, now 95 years old, is not on life support but he is unable to speak because of the tubes that are inserted in his mouth to clean the lungs.
She said to The Sunday Independent, “he can’t actually articulate anything” and added, “he communicates with the face, you see. But the doctors have told us they hope to recover his voice.”
Mandela was lately released on September 1 from the hospital, where he was admitted because of lung infection.
Madikizela Mandela clarified, “I have heard this nonsense that he is on life support. He is not.”
The country’s hero is under observation of 22 doctors. His pneumonia is pretty much under control but his lungs are still vulnerable.
“He remains very sensitive to any germs, so he has to be kept literally sterile. The bedroom there (in Houghton) is like an ICU ward,” she described the facilities he is receiving at his place.
She is also glad that Mandela got rid of his last infection (pneumonia), “he remains quite ill, but thank God the doctors were able to pull him through from that (last) infection.”
Mandela and health threats
This is not the first time that Mandela is so severely ill; he has faced plenty of health threats in last couple of years.
Mandela is in environment which he recognizes and as per his ex-wife, “when he is very relaxed, he is fine and it has given us a lot of hope.”
However, his lung problem has been a serious health issue for him and he has been admitted to hospitals several times since last few years because of it.
Mandela has plenty of well wishers
Mandela who is known as the leader who brought democracy and peace in South Africa, has many admirers around the globe who keep sending them their well wishes.
And especially, his own people love him so much. Although he is out of public eye for many years, he is still regarded as the symbol of unity in his homeland.
