ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani government has appointed Jalil Abbas Jilani as its Ambassador in the United States of America on Friday after a long time delay.
Pakistan’s Foreign Office (FO) has made formal announcement today for the appointment its Ambassador to US.
The FO spokesman said that the new ambassador will take charge of his position in next month.
Earlier, former Ambassador Sherry Rehman resigned on the post in Washington after her her party’s defeat in the May 11 general elections.
However, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has finally picked veteran diplomat Jilani for the important diplomatic assignment.
Jilani had also performed his duties as deputy high commissioner in New Delhi in 2003.
Ambassador Jalil Abbas Jilani was previously appointed as Foreign Secretary by the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in March 2012.
He is a career diplomat and prior to his current appointment, he served as Ambassador of Pakistan to Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Union. He also interacted with the NATO HQ based in Brussels on regular basis.
From 1989 to 1992, Ambassador Jilani served as Deputy Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Secretariat.
His other overseas assignments included; Jeddah (1983-1985), London (1985-1988), Washington (1995-1999) and High Commissioner to Canberra, Australia (2007-2009).
