ISLAMABAD: Following a coup which has deprived him of his premier seat in 1999, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has ordered registering High Treason Case against Pervez Musharraf over breaking the constitution.
Giving policy statement of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz over the detention of former dictator Pervez Musharraf on the assembly floor, Nawaz said that Musharraf had defied the constitution for twice.
“For the first time, he made a coup in 1999 against a democratic government in a time when the country had been flourishing while for in 2007 he put judges of the country in detention in a total defiance against the constitution.”
The prime minister ordered the authorities relevant to take action against the former president and army chief under article 6 of the constitution.
It may be pointed out that Article 6 states that any violation of the constitution comes under High Treason, which has strictest punishment for the violator.
“Musharraf had to be accountable for his deeds,” PML-N head said and added that this was for the first time when the elected house (parliament) had not endorsed move of a dictator.
Giving stance of his party, opposition leader from Pakistan Peoples Party Syed Khursheed Shah welcomed the move from the government.
“But all pictures of previous dictators should also be removed from house which have defied democratic norms.”
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) deputy parliamentary leader Shah Mahmud Qureshi also backed the move from the political arch-rival PML-N.
“We will be backing the government whenever there is a need to strengthen the parliament and the democracy.”
