WASHINGTON: The only thing that experts failed to predict was the name — iTunes Radio, not iRadio, which was launched on Monday as the culmination of this year’s keynote speech on the opening day of the Apple World Wide Developer Conference.
Offering free music streaming across all iOS devices but also on Windows PCs, Mac notebooks and even the Apple TV set top box, it will be free to all users when it launches later this year as part of the update to iOS, Apple’s mobile operating system for iPhones and iPads. It will be supported by ads, however, users that subscribe to iTunes Match — Apple’s cloud-based music storage and replication system that lets iTunes account holders stream music from the cloud to their devices — will get an ad-free version for no extra cost.
As expected, users can like or dislike individual tracks on a stream and can click though to iTunes to buy individual songs that they hear.
