ISLAMABAD: The election candidates who will seek votes on the basis of religion and sectarianism will face three years imprisonment, Pakistan’s Election Commission said on Wednesday.
In a statement issued here, the ECP said that if a candidate found bribing voters would also be sent to jail.
Pakistan is set to hold general election on May 11 and it will be first democratic transition of power in history of the country.
The statement further said that three year jail terms would also be awarded for casting fake votes and stopping others from casting votes. The commission, imposing ban on providing transports to voters other than their family members, also set three years jail term for violators.
The ECP said that on the day of polling, police will be authorised to arrest any person on the directives of Presiding Officers without warrants.
