Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has cancelled the election of Dr Qayyum Soomro as a Senator and ordered for re-election of the technocrat seat in the Upper house of Parliament.
A three-member bench of the ECP led by Justice (retd) Riaz Kayani heard a petition filed by Tariq Mehmood according to which Dr Qayyum did not meet the standards required for the technocrats’ seat.
Dr Qayyum Soomoro, who is a close aide of President Asif Ali Zardari, was elected as a Senator unopposed on Mar 7 this year on the technocrat seat vacated by former finance minister Dr Hafeez Sheikh.
Moreover, the petition added that Dr Soomro had not submitted details of his assets as well.
The bench said that Dr Soomro did not meet the requirements of the technocrat seat and the ECP could be a silent spectator in the case.
