Karachi: Law enforcement agencies on Wednesday arrested five suspects from Gulshan-e-Iqbal area for their alleged involvement in attack on Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) leader Maulana Aurangzeb Farooqui.
A private news television said that the agencies had conducted raid in Block 6 of the area and arrested the five suspects. “They have also recovered arms from their possession.”
All the suspects have been shifted to an undisclosed place for investigation, the television added.
Sources said that the suspects who had been taken into custody include Zulfiqar Taqvi, Altaf Taqvi, Azadar Taqvi, Iftikhar Taqvi and Zeshan Haider.
ASWJ leader Maulana Farooqui came under attack and injured when armed men opened fire on his vehicle near Moti Mehal area in Gulshan-e-Iqbal town on Tuesday, killing six people including four policemen, his personal guard and a driver.
ASWJ central leader Allama Muhammad Ludhianvi called on party workers to remain peaceful and cooperate with local authorities in establishing peace.
Meanwhile, a partial strike is being observed in city and public transport is thin on the roads while all the main markets are closed.
Angry protesters opened aerial firing in different areas and also pelted stones on cars and other private transport in Shershah, Patel Para, Banaras, Lasbela and Guurumandir.
They also blocked the roads for traffic by burning tyres.
