Rawalpindi: The statements of Chairman of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Admiral Fasih Bokhari (retired) regarding corruption in Pakistan are aimed at cheap popularity, a retired army official said on Wednesday.
Corruption has become part of our culture but the repeated harsh allegations by the Chairman NAB are aimed at covering up his failures and the collusion among the anti-corruption body and dishonest elements, said Lt. Col. M Tariq Kamal (retired), former Director Engineering DHA, Islamabad while talking to the correspondent of independent bilingual British news website The News Tribe.
In a statement issued here Wednesday, he said that NAB is directly responsible for increasing corruption in Pakistan as it has always provided shelter to the corrupt.
He said that ‘stock mafia’ deprived masses of billions of rupees in many ‘artificial collapse’ but NAB did nothing to bring the culprits to book and limited itself to giving statements.
Similarly, practically dysfunctional NAB’s role has remained negative in dozens of high-profile cases which is evident from the statement of Chief Justice Pakistan who blamed the authority for supporting corruption.
Giving an example, Col. Tariq said that Bahria Town and top officials of DHA Islamabad are directly involved in plunder to the tune of 200 billion rupees, of which all evidence has been provided to chairman NAB since two years. However, he would not initiate any meaningful action and continue to shelter the corrupt.
Admiral Fasih should let masses know when he knew about corruption, why he started talking about it at this juncture when he has served over one year on the present post and will he take any action against the corrupt, he questioned.
The NAB under the incumbent chairman is not only accused of violating laid down rules and procedures, but is also turning a blind eye to the corruption and offering friendly prosecution of NRO cases in favor of influential, said Col. Tariq.
He said that NAB lacks ability to name the accused or substantiate claim that the corruption in government departments has crossed Rs 10 billion per day.
He informed The News Tribe that he had been intimating with the President of Pakistan, Chief Justice of Pakistan, Chief of Army Staff and other authorities in written, detailing the evidences that he has on the subject, but to no avail.
Unfortunately, the people who are entrusted to apprehend culprits are themselves committing the crimes, he concluded.
