Quetta: Balochistan government on Tuesday suspended anti-polio campaign in the province after attacks on volunteers of the campaign in Karachi and Peshawar, officials said.
Balochistan government spokesperson on polio Noorul Haq Baloch said that the campaign was suspended for an indefinite period in Quetta, Qilla Abdullah and Pishin districts due to security threat to the volunteers.
Baloch said that last year 73 cases of polio virus were reported in Balochistan. This year four confirmed cases of polio and 11 cases of polio 2 virus were reported so far in the said province, Baloch added.
Baloch further said that polio-2 virus was curable as it could be treated within three months.
Balochistan Health Department with collaboration of World Health Organization (WHO) decided to resume the campaign from December 24 to 28 in the districts.
In past, militants had issued serious warnings to anti-polio teams many times in different districts of the province.
During last month, a volunteer was killed in eastern by-Pass area of the provincial capital, murderers are still at large.
